About Bell House

Bell House - Where Independence Lives

Our Vision

Bell House – home for some – gateway for others. Bell House will provide the benchmark by which programs and services for adults with physical disabilities will be measured. We will commit ourselves to innovative programming that meets the needs of those that call Bell House "home," as well as those for whom Bell House serves as a gateway to higher levels of independence.

Our Mission

Advancing the independence of adults with physical disabilities. Bell House is committed to providing quality professional care in an atmosphere where the dignity, development, health and happiness of the residents and program participants are recognized and encouraged. Bell House focuses attention on the capabilities of each resident and program participant and challenges them to expand their ideas, develop their interests, pursue their dreams and live the most responsive, independent and self-sufficient life possible.

Our Past

Bell House opened its doors in 1979 with a simple, yet unique, mission: to serve as a residence solely for adults with physical disabilities caused by orthnerologically-based abnormalities, such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida. At that time, individuals with these conditions were relegated to nursing homes or were bravely cared for at home until their needs eventually surpassed their families' ability to provide for them.

Not even forward-thinking founder, Marie Bell, could have imagined the role that Bell House would come to play in the lives of so many people and the asset it would become to the Greensboro community. Individuals, who once saw only a dim future as their destiny, now had hope that they could experience the freedom and autonomy taken for granted by others their age. They now had access to recreational activities, to learning opportunities, to round-the-clock care – and they were with their peers, so their differences weren't different!

Our Future

Bell House has operated at full capacity since it opened in 1979. Though no formal marketing is done to recruit applicants, Bell House maintains a constant waiting list and recognizes the need to expand its services. Thanks to a very generous donation by Revolution Properties Holdings LLC of 6.78 acres of land surrounding Bell House and an anonymous gift of $1,000,000; Bell House has launched the We Are Able Capital Campaign the We Are Able Capital Campaign with a goal of $4,000,000. We have plans to expand our facility to almost double its current size, which will enable us to invite many others on our waiting list to live here. With the expansion, there will be room for more people, more enrichment activities, and best of all, greater independence.

Additionally, Bell House has expanded its Advancing Independence day program so we can offer adults with physical disabilities an opportunity to learn new skills, expand their knowledge in a wide variety of subjects, and most importantly, experience new friendships in an environment that understands their particular needs.

Help us make a difference in the lives of our residents today by donating or volunteering.
